Digital Engagement #7 – The Internet of Things

For today’s Digital Engagement, I was tasked with journaling my usage of technology for a day. Here is a screenshot of said journal–

To be quite honest, it’s definitely a very unprofessional journal, and that’s because I use technology so flagrantly that recording every single time I used it would be tedious. For example, I check my phone intermittently throughout the day, and my laptop is necessary for most tasks.

Most of my technology usage boiled down to:

  • Laptop + Mouse, Headset
  • Phone + AirPods
  • EagleOne Card Swipe/Tap

The most interesting aspect to me is the card swipe feature, which makes me require interacting with some form of technology to return to my room. I absolutely get why it exists, and think it’s a great use of technology, but it is wild to think about how the internet is essential to my basic survival at this point.

Laptop use has become essential to doing work, nearly all of my assignments are computer-based, so I have to use it. My phone is probably my most “non-essential” device at this point, but it’s ironically the one I use the most. I’ll also admit that circumstances (identity fraud.) have reduced my overall technology usage, because I’m currently incapable of using my debit card.

I wish I had more interesting findings, but I’m not sure I do. Technology is all around us, but I really don’t own many “smart” items. I have a Fridge in my room, but it’s “dumb”, and I didn’t even use it for that 24 hour period. I generally find “smart” items to be unnecessary and overly complicated, so I doubt I’ll be using many of those in the future.

Except for a Roomba. A Roomba sounds like it’d be fun. Just a little guy going around vacuuming. Those guys are cool.
